Drug Uses
Tofranil is used for treatment of depression. It is also used in some children to help reduce bedwetting. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

How Taken
Use Tofranil as directed by your doctor. Take Tofranil with or without a meal. Taking Tofranil at bedtime may help reduce side effects (eg, daytime drowsiness). Discuss this possibility with your doctor. It may take 1 to 3 weeks before you notice the effect of Tofranil. Continue to use Tofranil even if you feel well.

You should pay close attention to changes in moods or actions, especially if changes occur suddenly. Contact your doctor right away if any of the following effects occur or worsen- depression, anxiety, restlessness or irritability, panic attacks, thoughts or attempts of suicide, or other unusual changes in behavior or mood. Tofranil may cause increased sensitivity to the sun. Avoid exposure to the sun, sunlamps, or tanning booths until you know how you react to Tofranil. Use a sunscreen or protective clothing if you must be outside for a prolonged period. Before you have any medical or dental treatments, emergency care, or surgery, tell the doctor or dentist that you are using Tofranil. Elderly patients may be more sensitive to the effects of Tofranil and might require a lower dose. Do not use Tofranil in children younger than 6 years of age. Safety and effectiveness in this age group have not been established.
